By Wisdom A House Is Built

By wisdom a house is built,
    and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
    with rare and beautiful treasures.

- Proverbs 24:3-4 New International Version (NIV)

My partner and I are sitting in bed with a view of the mountains through the large, glass-paned door to our right. Several feet from us is a woodstove in which a fire fends off the cold Tennessee morning. And as we recline under the covers with bibles on our laps, my partner prays aloud for us both.

Recently, we've been through difficult times, both together and apart from each other. We've struggled in our relationship, ending it, mending it, and trying anew. And speaking for myself, through reading God's word, His grace has shed light on how far from Him I have lived; on how much I need His word to learn and grow; on how I can be a better man for Him and for my partner.

With an open heart, my partner prays for God to help us build a better relationship, one that glorifies Him. We are imperfect people, she and I, and are no strangers to sin. The more I learn about God, the more I read His book, the more of my sins I see.

But by reading the bible, by studying His word, I'm learning to live a righteous life and be a better man. In so doing, I am better equipped to build with my partner the loving relationship that will last and that glorifies God for which she prays.

I think the proverb quoted above applies to this matter both in an individual matter and in terms of our relationship with each other and with God.

By wisdom a house is built
How I'm reading that is, first, the house can be my relationship with God. Second, it can be a moral framework in which I live my life. Thirdly, the house can be the relationship built with my partner. As far as wisdom is concerned, perhaps that is the application of experience by living God's word.

and through understanding it is established;
I'm learning that those houses, those structures that protect and comfort and provide a sense of belonging, can be affirmed and made permanent through learning God's will.

Through studying the bible, not just reading it but mindfully learning God's word, I'm seeking to live in love and in righteousness. In this way, perhaps my partner and I can build a house that pleases God.

through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
That knowledge must be what is learned from the bible through diligent study. And the more I read, the more I understand God's will and the better the chances are that my relationship to my partner will bear good fruit.

We both want to build this house with God, on the foundation of his word. We both want to build this house that honors Him and that sustains us. And I know that by the continued study of the bible, and application of that knowledge, and by God's will, we will build a house that protects and comforts us both as we turn our lives over to belong to God.
